There are some evenings that become part of a village\u2019s collective memory. In Vejer, one of them is undoubtedly the Night of the Candles.<\/p>\n

Every spring, thousands of candles transform the streets, squares and hidden corners of the historic centre into a scene unlike any other. This year, around 20,000 candles illuminated the village. At the Califa, we contributed roughly a thousand of them, spread across terraces, balconies, window ledges and courtyards. Lighting them all took several hours and a small team of patient hands, but the result was worth every minute.<\/p>\n

As James Stuart, CEO of the Califa, explains: \u201cThe Night of the Candles remains one of the most special dates in Vejer\u2019s calendar. For a few hours, the village seems to belong to another age.\u201d<\/p>\n

As darkness falls and the public lighting is switched off, the whitewashed streets begin to glow beneath a warm, flickering light. Conversations soften, footsteps echo across the cobbles and the atmosphere of the village changes completely.<\/p>\n

The Plaza de Espa\u00f1a becomes one of the focal points of the evening. This year, an open-air concert accompanied the illumination of the square, where thousands of small flames shared the stage with towering palms, historic walls and a spectacular full moon that seemed determined to join the performance.<\/p>\n

Yet perhaps the most remarkable aspect of the night is not the number of candles or the beauty of the setting, but the way it changes the rhythm of the village itself. Residents and visitors wander through the streets, pausing to notice details that often go unseen and rediscovering Vejer beneath an entirely different light.<\/p>\n

For those planning to visit next year, the advice is simple: arrive early, find a table on a terrace, enjoy a drink and a tapa or two, and watch the last daylight fade from the whitewashed walls. Then, as the candles are lit and the village settles into its golden glow, simply enjoy the spectacle.<\/p>\n
