Some people become part of a place’s history. May is one of them. She joined Califa in May 2004 to cover a few shifts at reception and, almost without realising it, ended up staying. Twenty-two years later, she has witnessed the growth of the Group, the transformation of Vejer and the stories of hundreds of travellers who have stayed at our hotels.<\/p>\n

Originally from San Fernando, although she now feels a little bit like a local, May tells us about her early days, what she enjoys most about her job, some memorable encounters with guests and her favourite spots in Vejer.<\/p>\n

A Life at Califa<\/h3>\n

May, you’ve been at Califa for 22 years. How did you first come to work here?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I’m from San Fernando and studied Labour Relations in C\u00e1diz. I joined Califa in May 2004 thanks to a friend from San Fernando who was already working there. Initially, she called me to cover the occasional shift whenever someone was off sick or needed someone to stand in.<\/p>\n

But about a week later, Regli called to ask whether I’d like to join the team. And here I am, 22 years later!<\/p>\n

\"May's<\/p>\n

What do you remember about those early years?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I remember them with so much excitement and enthusiasm to learn and work. It was like one big family. Almost all of us were just starting out, and we learnt as we went along, often through trial and error.<\/p>\n

Just imagine, we didn’t even use computers for bookings! We had sheets of paper where we wrote everything down by hand. If a guest cancelled, we’d simply get the rubber out and erase their booking. That’s how we worked, with a pencil and rubber!<\/p>\n

You’ve seen so many changes over the years. How has Califa evolved?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It has changed enormously. From computerising our booking system to improvements across the hotels, introducing new guest services such as parking, and expanding the Califa Group’s restaurants and properties.<\/p>\n

The way we work has changed too. In those early days, we were a smaller team and everything felt very much like a family. As the Group has grown, those close relationships we had with one another have naturally changed as well.<\/p>\n

Much More Than Reception<\/h3>\n

After all these years, what do you enjoy most about your job?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The most rewarding part is when a guest thanks you for something you’ve done for them. And often, it’s not just about reception duties. It’s about helping someone on a personal level, recognising when they need something and being able to lend a hand.<\/p>\n

We have guests who have been coming back for so many years that they’re almost like friends. When you see the same people year after year, you develop a really special relationship.<\/p>\n

\"May<\/p>\n

What do you think guests appreciate most about our hotels?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Above all, the personal attention they receive and the unique character of our buildings. Our hotels are quite different from others, with so much personality, and I think it’s that combination that guests really love.<\/p>\n

After 22 years, you must have experienced all sorts of situations. Do you remember any particularly funny encounters with a guest?<\/strong><\/p>\n

So many! I particularly remember a lady who was staying in the Africa room. She had booked for two nights, but when it was time to leave, she simply didn’t want to go. She told us she’d received a sign from heaven telling her that this was where she was meant to live and that she had absolutely no intention of leaving.<\/p>\n

The problem was that the room was already booked for other guests arriving that very day. There was absolutely no convincing her that she had to check out!<\/p>\n

Vejer, a Place to Return To<\/h3>\n

You’re originally from San Fernando, but after all these years here, do you feel a little bit like a local?<\/strong><\/p>\n

A little bit, yes! Although I’m from San Fernando, after so many years working here, Vejer has become part of my life too.<\/p>\n

When a guest visits Vejer for the first time, what do you recommend?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Exploring the old town and discovering its historic monuments, of course. I also recommend spending time on the beautiful beaches nearby.<\/p>\n

And what’s your favourite spot in Vejer?<\/strong><\/p>\n

One of my favourite places is the area around the old town walls. I love walking there, enjoying the views and soaking up the peaceful atmosphere. It’s such a relaxing place and somewhere I always enjoy going back to.<\/p>\n

May, Beyond Califa<\/h3>\n

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I love travelling, reading, cycling and going for walks. In summer, I particularly enjoy spending days at the beach, where I can relax and switch off.<\/p>\n
