The countryside surrounding Vejer de la Frontera is home to small communities where creativity, traditions and respect for nature go hand in hand with new approaches to rural life.
One of these communities is Paternilla, which on 17 and 18 October 2026 will open its paths, homes, farms and creative spaces to celebrate Algarrobo, the first open-door event dedicated to rural culture. The event is supported by Califa, which has joined the initiative to promote sustainability, respect for the environment and the preservation of the area’s rural heritage.
Organised by the Paternilla Residents’ Association, the event aims to share knowledge, experiences and projects centred on caring for the land, sustainability and community life.
Over two days, residents and visitors will be able to explore different locations throughout the hamlet, meet the people behind them and discover initiatives celebrating the area’s natural and cultural heritage.
Exploring rural life in Paternilla
What makes Algarrobo special is the people at its heart: the residents of Paternilla, who will open their doors to share their way of life, their creativity and the projects they are developing.
Participating venues include Equbosque, Espacio Kuatro, EntreRaíces, Casa Gaia, Casa La Breña and La Era, alongside a number of private homes and rural properties.
Each will offer a different perspective on country life, from traditional crafts to innovative approaches to water conservation, food production, natural building materials and sustainable transport.
Visitors are free to explore the route on foot, following a map that will guide them through the participating venues and the surrounding Paternilla countryside.
The carob tree: a symbol of the event
The carob tree, one of the most characteristic trees of the Mediterranean landscape, lends its name to this first edition and symbolises the connection between people and the land.

Its importance in rural culture, its many uses and its ability to thrive in the local environment make it the central theme of a programme combining tradition, creativity and sustainability.
Activities include workshops on making carob flour and syrup, tree planting, creating seed bombs, traditional crafts using dwarf palm leaves and beeswax, dance and nature-based activities.
The programme also features photography exhibitions, local crafts, live music, art installations, performances and markets.
Food with local roots: a carob recipe competition
Food will also take centre stage with the Carob Recipe Competition, inviting participants to rediscover and reinterpret this traditional ingredient through a variety of culinary creations.

The competition will take place on Sunday 18 October at Espacio Kuatro, with a judging panel made up of food professionals and local produce specialists.
Califa is supporting the initiative by sponsoring the competition prizes: dinner for two at El Jardín del Califa for the winner and an experience for two at Hammam de Vejer for the runner-up.
The recipes entered will also be included in a recipe book published with the support of Grupo Califa, helping to preserve and share new ways of using this locally grown ingredient.
Two days to come together and celebrate
Saturday 17 October will focus mainly on the open-door trail, with visits to participating farms, homes and venues, alongside workshops, talks and cultural activities.

On Sunday 18 October, the celebrations will continue with a community gathering at Espacio Kuatro and Casa La Breña, from 10 am to 4 pm, featuring activities, a market, competitions and a communal paella.
This is an opportunity to discover a different side of Vejer, beyond its famous historic centre, and meet the people and projects keeping the area’s rural culture alive.
Admission is free and everyone is welcome.
