September continues to fill Vejer with things to do. Culture, flamenco, contemporary art, guided walks through the historic centre, nature and plenty of ways to enjoy the final weeks of summer all come together over the next few days. With temperatures still pleasantly warm and a little more tranquillity after the height of summer, September is one of the best times to discover Vejer de la Frontera and its surroundings. This week’s agenda combines some of the town’s much-loved classics with new exhibitions and cultural events.
Thursday 17 September: market day and a different kind of evening in Vejer
The week begins with Vejer’s traditional Thursday market on Calle El Chorrillo, open from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.
A range of guided tours also continue throughout the week, offering the chance to discover Vejer’s historic quarter with Vejer Free Tours and Vejer Tour, with departures in the morning and afternoon.
As evening falls, a rather different option is La Noche Oscura de Vejer, a guided and musical tour departing from Plaza de España at 9:00 pm and exploring some of the town’s stories and legends.
Friday 18: great masters of printmaking arrive in Vejer
One of the week’s cultural highlights takes place on Friday with the opening of an exhibition featuring prints by Dürer, Rembrandt and Rubens, at 7:00 pm at the Museum of Archaeology and History of Vejer.
The exhibition will remain open until 18 December, making it an excellent cultural option for anyone visiting Vejer this autumn.
For families, the Cantarranas neighbourhood centre will also host the free activity “Archaeologists for a Day”, aimed at children aged four and over and their families.
At 8:00 pm, the Teatro Municipal San Francisco will screen the film El ser querido.
Saturday 19: nature, contemporary art and flamenco
Saturday brings together some of the most special plans of the weekend.
In the morning, visitors can join a guided visit to the Torre del Tajo, located in the heart of the La Breña y Marismas del Barbate Natural Park, between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm.
At sunset, the Fundación Montenmedio Contemporánea offers the chance to experience James Turrell’s light sequence, an installation in which light, colour and perception transform the sky into part of the artwork itself.
To round off the day, flamenco takes centre stage at the Centro Cultural Municipal Antigua Iglesia del Rosario. At 10:00 pm, Juan Antonio Sodi will perform vocals, accompanied by Sergi Gómez on guitar and La Bambina dancing. Admission is free.
Sunday 20: crafts in Santa Lucía and outdoor plans
Sunday begins with the opening of the new Plaza and Santa Lucía Craft Market from 10:00 am.
There will also be another opportunity to visit the Torre del Tajo, explore Vejer with a guide or head to Montenmedio to experience James Turrell’s light installation at sunset.
A perfect excuse to combine a morning in Vejer with a visit to some of the natural landscapes surrounding the town.
From Monday 21 to Thursday 24: discovering Vejer at a slower pace
Over the following days, guided tours through the historic centre continue, offering one of the best ways to discover Vejer’s walls, whitewashed streets, patios and some of the stories hidden behind its best-known corners.
On Tuesday 22, the Peña Cultural Flamenca will also host a flamenco gathering from 8:00 pm.
On Thursday 24, the El Chorrillo market returns from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, perfect for starting the morning before wandering through the historic centre.
Exhibitions to visit in Vejer this week
Beyond the daily events, September is also an ideal time to discover Vejer’s cultural scene.
From 18 September, the Museum of Archaeology hosts the exhibition “Dürer, Rembrandt and Rubens and their circle through original etchings and prints”, open from Monday to Saturday.
Until 30 September, visitors can also see “Raíces y Movimiento” by Víctor Mateo Art at the Centro de las Artes Antigua Iglesia del Rosario.
And just a few minutes from Vejer, the Fundación Montenmedio Contemporánea offers the chance to explore one of the area’s most distinctive open-air sculpture parks, with works integrated into the surrounding dehesa landscape.
