September continues to bring plenty to see and do in Vejer de la Frontera and the surrounding area. Flamenco, live music, contemporary art, cinema, walks through the historic old town and outdoor activities all feature on the agenda for the coming days.
The weekend also brings together some of the most interesting events, from activities at the Fundación Montenmedio Contemporánea to concerts in El Palmar, flamenco and experiences that reveal another side of Vejer.

What to do in Vejer this weekend: 4, 5 and 6 September
Friday 4 September
Friday offers plenty of ways to start the weekend. During the morning, the usual guided tours of Vejer’s historic old town take place at different times, offering the chance to discover the town’s history, heritage and legends.
As the afternoon draws to a close, the music moves to El Palmar, where Mirror Ball will perform at El Pico de la Ola.
At 8pm, Teatro Municipal San Francisco will screen Tadeo Jones y la lámpara maravillosa, a film particularly suitable for families.
The evening also marks the start of the 29th Poblado de Varelo – El Cañal Festival, with an opening speech, live music and a DJ. Back in the centre of Vejer, La Noche Oscura de Vejer returns, a guided and sung tour departing from Plaza de España at 9pm.
The day concludes at 10pm with another flamenco performance at the Antigua Iglesia del Rosario, featuring El Güito de Cádiz singing, Alma Cote and Eva La Espratera dancing, and Juan Antonio Gómez on guitar. Admission is free.
Saturday 5 September
Saturday is one of the busiest days of the week. Those who would like to start the day surrounded by nature can head to the La Breña y Marismas del Barbate Natural Park, where a guided visit to the Torre del Tajo will take place from 10am to 2pm.
At 10.30am, Fundación Montenmedio Contemporánea is hosting the Textile Collage and Thread Painting workshop, with advance booking required. Guided tours of Vejer’s historic centre also continue throughout the morning.
At sunset, Montenmedio offers one of the most distinctive experiences of the week: a visit to James Turrell’s light sequence, an experience lasting approximately 40 minutes that must be booked in advance.
There will also be live music by the sea with Dr Diablo in El Palmar, while Teatro San Francisco will host a charity fashion show organised by the Sandra nos Une Association, with a fashion parade and special performance at 8pm.
The evening continues with La Noche Oscura de Vejer and, at 10pm, another flamenco performance at the Antigua Iglesia del Rosario, this time featuring Manuel de la China singing and Antonio El Haro on guitar and lute.
Sunday 6 September
Sunday is another good opportunity to combine nature, art and culture in Vejer. The guided visit to the Torre del Tajo takes place again in the morning, along with a range of tours around the historic centre.
The Poblado de Varelo – El Cañal Festival celebrates its final day with competitions, a magic show, music and fireworks. At sunset, there will be another opportunity to experience James Turrell’s light installation at Montenmedio, while at 8pm Tadeo Jones y la lámpara maravillosa will once again be screened at Teatro San Francisco.
At 9pm, the La Noche Oscura de Vejer guided singing tour once again departs from Plaza de España.
Things to do in Vejer from Monday 7 to Thursday 10 September
There is plenty going on throughout the week, particularly for those making the most of a longer stay and looking to discover Vejer in greater depth.
Monday 7 September
On Monday, guided tours of the historic old town continue both in the morning and afternoon. At 9pm, La Noche Oscura de Vejer returns, taking visitors through the town’s history and legends through song.
Tuesday 8 September
Tuesday brings more opportunities to explore Vejer with a guide. From 8pm, Peña Cultural Flamenca hosts a flamenco gathering, followed by another edition of La Noche Oscura de Vejer at 9pm.
Wednesday 9 September
Guided tours once again take centre stage on Wednesday, with morning routes through some of the most representative corners of Vejer’s historic quarter. At 9pm, La Noche Oscura de Vejer takes place once again.
Thursday 10 September
Thursday begins with the traditional market on Calle El Chorrillo, open from 9am to 2pm.
Throughout the day, guided tours of Vejer continue at various times, and at 9pm La Noche Oscura de Vejer once again departs from Plaza de España.
Contemporary art in Vejer during September
Beyond the daily programme, September offers plenty of other plans that can easily be added to a stay in the area.
Throughout the month, visitors can see the exhibition Raíces y Movimiento, by Víctor Mateo Art, at the Centro de las Artes Antigua Iglesia del Rosario. The exhibition runs until 30 September.
The Fundación Montenmedio Contemporánea is also well worth a visit. Its sculpture park brings contemporary art into a natural setting and is open from Tuesday to Sunday during September.
