There are moments when the sea is not the only protagonist. The body is too. And the way we inhabit it.
At Hotel Madreselva, just a few meters from the beach of Los Caños de Meca, we experienced something where time seemed to settle into a different rhythm: the pool reflecting the light, boards resting in the patio, and among palm trees, something less visible but deeper began. Breathing.

This is “The Art of Relaxation – Surf Survival Clinic”, an experience that proposes something simple and, at the same time, radical: learning how to stay calm when the ocean becomes unpredictable.

The art of not fighting the wave. Surfing is, in many ways, a dialogue with the uncontrollable. But it is also deeply internal: breath, tension, fear, anticipation. This clinic starts there. From understanding that beyond technique, there is a key space within the nervous system. And that it can be trained.

Guided by Momo, a professional freediver and breathwork specialist, participants explore tools drawn from freediving and apnea, translated into real situations in the water: a hold-down, an intense paddle, or that moment when everything accelerates inside you.

With practice, humour, and a clear idea: it’s not about holding on longer, but about responding better. Breathe, move, let go.
In this upcoming edition, taking place on April 8th, the experience expands. @selina.john_ joins, adding a physical and sensory layer: surf-focused yoga to open and activate the body, and a closing with sound bowls to help integrate and release. The journey feels almost choreographed: breathe, move, understand… and finally let go. Designed for a small group.

One of the participants from the last workshop, Angelina, put it like this:
“After the course, I went surfing. I felt more confident underwater, because I knew I could hold my breath for longer.”
Lucía spoke about balance:
“A beautifully balanced mix of body awareness, relaxation and playfulness. Understanding what happens in the body when holding my breath helped me manage stress and fear better.”
Maybe that’s what happens here.
It’s not just about surfing better, but about inhabiting uncomfortable moments in a different way. In and out of the water.
An experience that continues at the table, with dinner at El Jardín de Madreselva.
